Brevard Business - Stumpy's Hatchet House

Business Name:

Business Overview:

Stumpy's Hatchet House is a business based on fun. The business started in 2016 when two families were enjoying beers and building a fire. Somehow between the beer and the idle time the men started throwing a hatchet. The women soon joined in and the two families, the Josbergers and the Oliphants, created a business plan around throwing a hatchet.

Today, Stumpy's is a successful franchise and we are lucky enough to have one in downtown Cocoa Village, Florida. Patrons pay a fee per hour to throw hatchets at wooden targets while drinking beer. What is better than that?

Famous For:

Stumpy's Hatchet House of Cocoa is famous because it is the only place in Brevard County that sells you beer and gives you a sharp object to throw at a target.

(Before throwing all participants must take a safety class and everyone must follow safety protocols.)

Pro Tip:

Angie, the owner, offered me a pro tip that should be used daily and not just when throwing a hatchet.

"Be confident and step forward."

She explain that many patrons are afraid they will throw it too hard. Angie explained that it is very difficult to be successful without confidence.

Angie isn't a big woman but she is poised and confident, and I believe she takes this tip seriously. When you throw hatchets at Stumpy's, you will meet Angie, she checks in with as many customers as she can to offer encouragement, assistance or refill your beverages.

Our Experience:

Every Friday night my wife and I try to do something fun. I finally surprised her with an amazing idea. My wife knew that she had to wear shoes (no open toed shoes allowed), clothes she could move in and be ready for a few beers, but the rest was a surprise. All of the way to Stumpy's my wife tried to guess where I was taking her. As we walked into Stumpy's, the music was bumping and we were greeted by a throwing concierge. The throwing guide explained the safety rules before we could enter. This Friday wasn't a normal Friday for Stumpy's: it was a Throw and Glow event, which meant that we were greeted by staff in neon outfits and black lights were shining throughout the venue.

The throwing coach taught us how to throw the hatchet. He taught us two ways to throw, double handed overhead and like a pitcher. After throwing for about 15 minutes we both started to get consistent. My mom used to say that every time a bell rings an angel gets it's wings, well at Stumpy's a bell means that a rookie got their hatchet to stick in the target. You should have seen the look on my wife's face when she stuck her hatchet in the bullseye, a throwing coach rang a loud bell and everyone cheered.

I would highly recommend a date night, boys or girls night out or party at Stumpy's. A large group was on the other side of the room and they had massive pizzas to go with their beer. It was a great experience.

We can't wait to go back!
